He was 23 years old and two days ago he had arrived in Lagunas de Chacahua, on the Pacific coast of Mexico, with a friend and his girlfriend. The young people had met the attacker on the boat that transported them to the destination where the attacker is in pretrial detention.
Benjamín Gamond (23) and Santiago Lastra (22) met in Córdoba back in 2008. Last Friday, while they were having lunch at a beach restaurant in Mexico with Macarena Elía González (Santiago's 29-year-old girlfriend), they were attacked hacked by a stranger. Benjamin, seriously injured by a head injury, was transferred in a medical plane to the General Hospital in the Mexican capital. A day later, he passed away.
"The Gamond family informs with immense pain, the sad news that Benja did not make it. The miracle did not happen. The efforts were enormous, like his strength and heart, but it was not enough," Facu Gamond, brother of the woman, wrote on social networks. victim. The family had posted a video over the weekend asking for financial help to move him to Mexico City.
The violent episode that led to the death of the young man occurred on May 12 in Lagunas de Chacahua, one of the most important tourist destinations in the coastal region of Oaxaca, on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The perpetrator of the attack, a 21-year-old Mexican from the municipality of Ometepec —later identified as Cruz Irvin Martínez Flores— was detained.
As Fernanda Carina González, Macarena's mother, explained in an interview with Necochea Digital, the three young men of Argentine origin arrived on the island on May 11 and met the attacker –identified as Cruz Irving Martínez Flores, 21 years old and a native of state of Guerrero– in a boat that transported them to their destination.
"He came with other people and he was talking to them, he told them he was a surf instructor. They talked like anyone who comes up to them and they didn't see him anymore. When they got to the island, he told them he was from there and that Anything they needed to know was going to walk along the coast," said Fernanda.
The three friends spent the night on the island and the next day went to a restaurant for lunch where they saw the attacker. Benjamin approached him to ask where they could buy surfboards.
"The guy looked at them as if he didn't know them, as if taken away," Macarena's mother explained. Later, they left the establishment and that's when Cruz Irving "ran out of nowhere like crazy" and attacked Benjamin with a machete to the face and head.
"The paramedics could not believe it, they could not understand how something like this had happened. In the place, people sleep with the doors open, it is tremendously paradisiacal and calm," he added.
The three young men were transferred to the Río Grande Community Hospital and later to the Ángel del Mar Hospital, in Puerto Escondido. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, Benjamin was transferred on a medical plane on Monday afternoon to a hospital in Mexico City, where he died.
For its part, the Oaxaca State Attorney General's Office reported that the attacker is in pretrial detention and the hearing to link the process was set for May 17.
The municipal government of Villa de Tutupetec, where the crime occurred, condemned the "violent acts" in a statement, and explained that the attacker came to the municipality in search of employment, so he "has no relationship with the community."
